FAQ

When Did You Start Writing?

I wrote my first story when I was five. Every one in it died. I actually still have it, my parents kept it, probably as a defense in court if it ever came to that.

Do You Plan Out Your Stories?

Never. I get an idea in my head and just start typing. As I get further in I will of course have ideas that I will throw at the end of the document as points to remember, but I love reading and the only way to enjoy reading what you are writing is to not know what is going to happen next. I love writing this way since it is exciting to see where the story goes. I remember writing my second novel and killing off a character that I had planned to have live. I actually got choked up as I typed her death scene because it came as a complete surprise to me.

What Are Your Writing Habits?

When I start to write a book I like to try and finish it as quickly as possible, usually ten to fifteen thousand words a week until I’m done, then several edits. The process usually takes a few months. Then I let it sit and revisit it several times until I’m happy with it. And as most writers will probably tell you, they’re never entirely happy, but eventually you must move on.

Do You Believe in the Crystal Skulls?

If I say no, will you still buy my book? Do I believe that they have magical powers from Atlantis? No. But if my research that showed that Hewlett Packard scientists couldn’t explain the Mitchell-Hedges skull is valid, then how do you explain them?

Do You Know George Lucas?

You’d think so. When I heard that the new Indiana Jones movie was called Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I nearly flipped out. The bastard had stolen my idea! Actually, they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but I’m pretty sure that he got his inspiration elsewhere since I’ve never met the man, and the book, although written before the title of the movie was announced, hadn’t been published yet.

Who Did the Research for The Protocol?

My father volunteered to research the weapons, military units, geographical locations, etc, included in the novel. The research was extensive and essential to the success of the novel. So although I’d like to take the credit, I can only take credit for any errors.
